To get started in leather work or leather craft you will
want to decide what you want to make and how it will be decorated. By decorate,
I mean are you going to carve and stamp the leather, will it be plain, or will
it be embossed? Knowing how you want to do this will be the indicator of the
tools you will need to purchase to complete the project.
Embossing leather is not my forte but I have done a lot of
carving and stamping and can give you a fair amount of advice on how to do it
here on this blog. Embossing produces a lot of beautiful leather projects and
you can probably find some tips for projects on those sites. If you find
something tell them I said “Hello!”
If you decide to try your hand at leather work don’t spend a
lot of money on leather stamps and don’t go out and buy a bunch of leather. It
would be a good idea to look at someplace like Tandy Leather Factory for a kit
which will have all of the parts and pieces that you need for the project and a
lot less expensive. Tools will be a separate purchase and you don’t have to
have all the stamps shown for the kits.
The next post I will give you a list of basic stamps that
you might want to have in your set. Don’t be like some of the people I met over
the years, they purchased every stamp that they could find and went great guns
for a month and stopped. A lot of money down the drain!
Have fun!
